Half of online shoppers do not check security, poll finds
Ecommerce users are lax on security, according to a recent survey.
The Press Association reported that almost half of online shoppers do not check the security of the website they are buying from and the portal in which they enter their credit card information.
A poll by YouGov found that of those planning to shop online for Christmas presents, 47 per cent did not know how to check whether their payment information was encrypted.
Furthermore, more than two-thirds of e-shoppers did not check contact details of the site prior to ordering - leaving them with no point of contact if the goods did not arrive.
Owen Roberts, head of the credit checking division at consumer data firm Callcredit, which commissioned the research, said: "With identity fraud and online scams becoming more and more sophisticated it is vital that we all spend a few extra seconds to protect ourselves when we are online."
He added that it is easy for shoppers to get carried away with Christmas gifts, but this should not affect the way they check if a site is secure.
The government recently announced that of the £500 million likely to be lost in online fraud scams this year, a large proportion will be over the Christmas period.
