Social.com named 2011's most expensive domain name
Social.com has been named the most expensive domain name of 2011 after reportedly selling for $2.6 million (£1.7million).
In a list published by Business Insider using data from DN Journal, the site beat DomainName.com ($1 million) and Aktien.de ($725,000) into second and third place respectively.
The word 'aktien' means stocks in German and the domain name was sold through the Sedo marketplace in July.
According to a report published by DH Journal in June, Social.com was purchased by an unidentified buyer in the UK. The deal was brokered by Moniker.com and Marksmen Inc.
Other domain names in 2011's most expensive list included RunningShoes.com ($700,000) and Puzzle.com, which sold for $500,000.
However, no domain name changing hands this year was able rival the biggest price tag of 2010, when the Sex.com domain was famously purchased in a $13 million deal.
The controversial .xxx domain names went on general sale earlier this month, despite opposition from several adult entertainment firms unhappy with the way ICM Registry has handled the process.
