Digital ecommerce is continuing to be an extremely competitive field, with many people taking to online stores instead of their high street counterparts, but businesses must be aware of the ins and out of running a firm online, according to one expert.
A spokesperson from Webtistic.co.uk, an internet marketing company comprising qualified and experienced consultants, suggested that many businesses are branching out their custom and day-to-day activities to include ecommerce platforms.
Dave Bird, managing director of the website, which has been involved in the online industry since 1998, said: "Digital commerce is very competitive and a significant marketing budget should be set aside from launch onwards. Many fail to realise that online profit margins are shaved down to minimums and that the success of bricks-and-mortar does not necessarily translate to online."
He explained that hidden costs such as those relating to factors like credit card chargebacks and the money involved in handling returns and refunds are often overlooked, but the success of ecommerce depends on a full understanding of all aspects involved.
"A high number of online start-ups fall into the trap of launching with a low-budget website design or platform," Mr Bird commented.
Business managers looking to get into the ecommerce market should also be aware of competitors, according to the expert, who stated that getting to know formats associated with the online marketplace is vital and that minor mistakes such as failing to put a contact number on the page or not having a box for promotional codes could discourage shoppers immediately.
Traffic will come to the website as long the needs of online shoppers are met, Mr Bird concluded.A recent report from regulatory body Ofcom found that ecommerce is thriving in the UK, ahead of several other major countries.
The study revealed that more people are using devices such as smartphones, laptops and tablets to purchase goods online.
