The UK is a haven for online shoppers, with more ecommerce consumers coming from Britain than any other major country in the world.
This is according to a new report by regulator Ofcom, which found that more and more people are using devices such as smartphones, laptops and tablets to purchase goods.
Ofcom chief executive Ed Richards said: "Across the globe people are embracing ecommerce and social media with enthusiasm. Our research shows that the UK communications market is performing well with prices, the range of services and innovation standing up well against international benchmarks."
He added that internet services such as the newest 4G rollout could make online shopping even more convenient and the better option for those wishing to get goods delivered to their homes.
"We are pressing ahead with plans to release this valuable spectrum at the end of next year, which will enable new mobile services for consumers," Mr Richards added.
The study by the communications regulatory body, which is its sixth international communications market report, looked at user patterns and found that Britons are embracing online retail ahead of other developed nations such as the US and countries across Europe.
UK internet users were also more likely to visit retail websites online than other countries, with nine in ten (89 per cent) claiming to do so in 2011, the report found.
Smartphone take-up has driven this surge, according to the organisation.
Additionally, ecommerce stores are expected to see an increase in the number of people doing their Christmas shopping online, while high street stores will witness a decline in transactions being made.
Patricia Davidson, author and founder of thesiteguide.com, suggested that online shopping is increasing in popularity each year and predictions for this year will reflect that.
She commented: "More and more [people] are deciding to do their Christmas shopping online. Shopping online is convenient and can frequently save you a lot of money, [but] it still doesn't have the pleasure factor of browsing the stores."
