Cloud computing has surpassed all other technologies currently on the market and has had by far the biggest impact on business practices in 2011, according to a new survey.
Research from BT Engage IT, the IT services division of BT Business, suggested that this year has been a successful year for virtualisation solutions but the growth will continue to significant levels in the next 12 months.
Out of the chief information officers who took part in the survey undertaken by independent research agency Vanson Bourne, 70 per cent agreed that their businesses had seen the biggest change in day-to-day running through the implementation of cloud solutions - compared to only 13 per cent last year who though it was similar to mobile technology.
John Thornhill, chief executive officer for BT Engage IT, said: "The industry has been talking about them [cloud and virtualisation technologies] for a number of years - and they've become business, rather than just technology terms - but companies are now using these technologies in earnest."
He added that cost savings, productivity gains and levels of customer service could be factors which have improved within businesses that have switched to using virtualisation methods.
"Whatever it means for companies, it’s curly clear that cloud and virtualisation are maturing as technologies, and now delivering real business benefits," Mr Thornhill added.
Data collected from the research showed that 76 per cent of respondents from companies with 1,000 to 3,000 employees said cloud and irtualisation had the biggest positive impact on their organisation's performance this year.
Dr Mick Grierson, computing director of the Goldsmiths College Creative Computing Programme, recently suggested that advanced computing technologies will engulf more traditional methods such as PC storage in 2012.
He mentioned that it is easy for a business to rent a server and use that to store data for simple access, rather than having a large central device in an office space.
