Cloud computing 'will increase in popularity in 2012'

Cloud computing 'will increase in popularity in 2012'

Cloud computing technologies will become more commonplace among businesses in the next year.

This is according to one expert from KeepItSafe, a specialist in online data backup and disaster recovery, who suggested that the future of data storage lies largely with virtualisation methods.

Eoin Blacklock, managing director of the company, said: "2012 will mark the year of data storage - how to store, secure, access and manage the accelerating growth of data. The act of storing data on USB sticks will slowly decrease in 2012 as businesses wake up to the risks associated with these devices."

He predicted that cloud computing will replace other forms of storage, which will slowly begin to be phased out as time goes on.

This is because devices such as memory sticks, external hard drives and CD-ROMs all have risk factors including data loss, configuration problems and damage to the actual device, Mr Blacklock explained.

He commented: "Virtualisation of servers and desktops will increase as companies need to adjust their storage systems."

Companies will need to think about adapting new technologies to their business models, the expert added. It will soon become impossible for service providers to continue to manage storage requirements with traditional methods of localised storage such as a large office server.

The move to virtualisation will be driven by the take-up of new technologies for both large and small businesses, Mr Blacklock continued.

ABI Research recently released figures that suggested the global enterprise social collaboration market would reach $3.5 billion (£2.24 billion) by 2016.

The statistics showed that cloud enterprises registered 51.7 per cent year-on-year growth to reach $898.6 million in 2010 and predictions reveal that this is set to rise continuously over the coming years.

ABI also commented that positive social media experiences could have encouraged the use of new sharing technologies.
