Virtualisation markets 'to reach $3.5 billion by 2016'

Virtualisation markets 'to reach $3.5 billion by 2016'

The latest figures about cloud computing and virtualisation technologies have shown that the global enterprise social collaboration market will reach $3.5 billion (£2.24 billion) by 2016.

Cloud services registered 51.7 per cent year-on-year growth to reach $898.6 million in 2010 and it is expected that this figure will continue to rise this year and over the next four years.

According to ABI Research, positive social media experiences may have encouraged internet users to opt for cloud solutions.

Dan Shey, practice director mobile services at the research facility, said: "Mobility is emerging as a key functionality across all platform offerings. Vendors realise the cloud is a powerful facilitator for application mobilisation and federation across multiple devices compared to premises-based solutions."

He added that smaller companies are integrating more with social media services, which will sit well with cloud systems and bridge gaps between communication and market needs.

ABI Research's new study Enterprise Social Media and Content Management Systems looks into the trends occurring in the small business market and how social collaboration with cloud computing can improve day-to-day business practices.

Its forecasts took into consideration these current trends and past figures for the five world regions, including the US and Canada.

"Smaller vendors are building solutions with compelling 'social' features that can integrate well with SharePoint, bridging significant solution gaps and addressing critical market needs," Mr Shey added.

Predictions from the International Data Corporation stated that the IT industry's next dominant product will be built on mobile computing, cloud virtualisation and social networking solutions.

Frank Gens, senior vice president and chief analyst at the company, said that the "third platform" will become a large player in the online markets of businesses and their practices.

He also commented that high-stakes investment from businesses into virtualisation technology providers will result in a battle between web hosting firms.
