Websites growing in size, study finds

Websites are increasing in size, giving more room for advanced technologies and design aspects, it has been revealed.

A study by the HTTP Archive has suggested that the average webpage is now around 965 kilobytes in size, which is 33 per cent higher than pages at the same time last year.

In 2010, the average online site was around 726 kilobytes, but experts have claimed that a growing number of people want websites to be interactive and incorporate multimedia features, which all require a larger space.

Freelance web developer Anna Debenham told BBC News: "There's always room for some optimisation.

"We've had a bit of a lull where we all thought everyone was using fast broadband. But now we are almost back to where we were with dial-up because mobile speeds are so slow."

She added that one of the issues with packed websites was that they could take too long to load and this would discourage internet users from going to a particular site.

The research showed that average webpage sizes were steadily rising throughout 2011.

However, results of the study also showed that the largest growth was in the amount of Javascript used by sites to make them more interactive.

Ryan Kim at tech news site Gigaom wrote that this was down to the increasing use of HTML5 - the latest way of formatting language for the internet.

International retailer Boots recently took the top spot for the best quality website for shoppers to visit when they are using their mobile phone to access the web.

A recent study carried out by ecommerce consultancy dotCommerce found that Boots was better than large fashion outlook New Look, which received 68 per cent of votes compared to a larger 75 per cent.

Ben Staveley, spokesman for the company, commented that growing consumer expectations and a competitive market are driving factors for a successful site.
