Online sports 'popular in New Zealand'
New data has shown that 83 per cent of internet users in New Zealand visited a sports website in October 2011.
The statistics from comScore demonstrate the power of a major event to drive online traffic, with the 2011 Rugby World Cup prompting many New Zealanders to seek out streaming video and other media related to the tournament on the internet.
According to the research, New Zealand was the top worldwide market in terms of sports category reach during the rugby competition, which was won by the home nation.
"It's not surprising that the market saw the majority of its online population turn to the web to keep up with the tournament," said Amy Weinberger, comScore vice president for Australia and New Zealand.
She added that the internet is playing an increasingly important role in global sporting events as more fans "turn to the web for real-time updates, results and live streaming".
The Rugby World Cup ran from September 9th to October 23rd, with the All Blacks defeating France 8-7 in the final in Auckland.
