Businesses using video streaming technology as part of their cloud computing services could be interested in recent research carried out by Instat.
The market research company has revealed that 50 per cent of media tablet owners are using the advanced technology to view television programmes as well as feature-length films as a result of the wide distribution of online video content.
Providing important implications for both producers and providers, the new statistics highlight the fact that the gadgets are increasingly being used as personal interaction devices for social networking websites and a range of applications.
"Tablets, in particular, have become a primary video device, both inside and outside the home," asserted research director Keith Nissen.
His comments emerge after the organisation predicted that 65 per cent of US consumers would own a smartphone or a tablet by 2015, signaling the need for technological advancements to support use of the devices.
Additional research revealed that the number individuals using their smartphones to utilise mobile video features will almost triple in the next five years, with 86 per cent of tablet users viewing video on their mobile devices.
In addition, researchers discovered that almost 50 per cent of respondents aged between 18 and 24 years old revealed that they frequently use social networking websites to discuss TV programmes that are currently being viewed.
"As these devices become a center-point for video engagement and consumption, content providers, device manufacturers, and operators need to support a multiscreen usage model that reflects social interaction, screen interaction, personalization, and mobility," Mr Nissen added.
The predictions emerge after Instat forecast 15 million e-readers to be shipped in the US next year, with 60 per cent of future owners planning to purchase the gadget with both Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity.
In addition, the research firm predicted that 15 per cent of tablet deliveries will enter into business markets by 2015.
