YouTube 'leads the way for October streaming figures'

YouTube 'leads the way for October streaming figures'

More than 200 billion video streaming activities took place across the world in October, according to the latest figures from comScore.

The statistics have suggested that the popularity of audio and video streaming is continually generating high traffic to websites hosting such content.

One of the largest streaming sites, YouTube, was reportedly receiving two of every five video views worldwide over the tenth month of the year.

The comScore report on global online video viewing habits also showed that nearly 1.2 billion people aged 15 and older watched 201.4 billion videos online globally.

YouTube ranked as the top video destination with nearly 88.3 billion videos viewed during the recorded month.

Dan Piech, comScore product manager for video, said: "As global broadband connectivity continues to rise, online video viewing has taken off in a big way and has become a fully integrated component of the digital content experience."

He added that predictions suggest the streaming market will continue to increase its views and popularity among internet users.

"With the introduction of comScore's global measurement of online video viewing, multinational media brands and advertisers can now gain a more comprehensive understanding of how online video reaches audiences around the world," Mr Piech explained.

The popularity of Google-owned YouTube was followed by China-based Youku, which recorded 4.6 billion videos viewed in October.

VEVO followed with nearly 3.7 billion videos - signifying a 1.8 per cent share of all streaming services - while Facebook had 2.6 billion views.

Looking to broaden its streaming output, terrestrial television channel ITV was recently in talks with video streaming service Netflix regarding a new output deal in time for the company's launch in the UK and Ireland, the Guardian reports.

Netflix was also said to be in talks with well-known companies such as Warner Bros and Channel 4.
