2-letter Irish internet domains could be used to raise money
The IE Domain Registry (IEDR) has said that it is considering holding an auction to raise money for good causes by selling two-letter domain names like hp.ie.
The Irish Times reported that the move could be made in order toshow people the value that is held in popular domain names.
David Curtin, chief executive of the IEDR, told the newspaper that a period of consultation will take place as there are fears that confusion could be caused with two-letter country domains.
Money raised from the auction could then be put towards a number of "internet good causes", such as IEDR's Optimise fund, which helps small businesses enhance and improve their e-commerce offering.
"That model seems to work better than giving a small business a cheque. Even if they are well intentioned, it invariably gets spent on the next bill that comes in the door, particularly in the current environment," he explained.
The number of dot.ie domain names in Ireland has increased during the first quarter of this year by 12 per cent, according to IEDR, with Camilla's Tea Emporium recently being registered as the 175,000th company.
