Africa 'could receive its own domain name'
Businesses in Africa could soon be given their own .africa domain name as part of new plans to give the continent's online content its own identity.
According to IT News Africa, the African Registry Consortium (ARC) aims to administer the title as a top-level domain name by 2013, with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers having the final say on the matter.
As part of the proposals, the same technology being used for the South African suffix will be utilised for the overall African version, which emerges after the success of similar programmes in Europe and Asia.
Speaking about the plans, ARC spokesman and founding member Koffi Fabrice Djossou said: "This new domain will give the continent a truly African identity for the first time and will allow companies and organisations operating here to proudly highlight their African operations and identity."
This news comes after the Cloud Industry Forum called upon British businesses to be aware of the launch of the .xxx domain name, which will primarily target the adult entertainment industry.
