Apple could make move into cloud hosting after domain name purchase
Apple could be the latest company to make a significant move into the cloud hosting market after it was thought to have purchased a new themed domain name.
The technology giant has reportedly purchased iCloud.com for around $4.5 million (£2.73 million) which could see it venture into storage services in the future.
John Paczkowski, writing on allthingsd.com, said that sources had told him that the company has bought the domain from Swedish cloud hosting firm Xcerion, adding that there are still a number of possibilities as to what Apple's plans are.
"Just what Apple plans to do with the domain is unclear. Presumably, it will have something to do with whatever cloud-based services the company is rumoured to be ramping up in its 505,000-square-foot North Carolina data centre," he said.
It was also revealed last month that domain name disputes increased by 24 per cent last year as domain registrations continue to grow.
