Businesses preparing for domain name registration
Companies are preparing to bid for a number of new domain names as concerns are raised over whether consumers will be confused by them.
That is according to Mikhail Basman, head of search at MPG Media Contacts, who told Marketing Magazine that businesses are going to have to spend a lot of money when changes come in.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers will soon release guidelines about unique domain names with company names after the dot.
Mr Basman told the news provider that keeping the dot com domain name should mean that businesses are not too affected by the change.
"Consumers know the distinction between '.com', '.co.uk' and '.gov', so as long as brands maintain their '.com' domain during the transition to the new register, they should be all right," he said.
"These brands, however, will need to have a transition plan in place."
UK registry Nominet announced last week that it will be putting a higher level of security on .uk domains.
