When it comes to domain names, generic top level domains (gTLDs) may be just around the corner, but .com remains king.
That is according to Econsultancy's Patricio Robles, who explained that the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is on the verge of loosening up the system for allocating domain names.
Writing on the company's blog, he added that there is currently some degree of confusion over the proposals and the potential legal issues that could be created.
However, he also pointed to .jobs as a precautionary tale for new gTLDs, adding that ICANN is threatening to shut it down because the operator of the registry, Employ Media, is failing to operate it in line with the "spirit and intention" of .Jobs.
What this means is that .jobs domain names are not being reserved for human resources professionals as had originally been intended, but to anyone willing to become a member of the Society of Human Resource Management.
"For better or worse, .com is still king, and as we've seen before, other domains may have some novelty factor, but they aren't always a safe bet," Mr Robles wrote.
"When it comes to new gTLDs, it might be worth assuming that the same is going to be true."
