High-profile figures and companies have been urged to take action to protect their brand from the upcoming .XXX domain name by registering to get it blocked when the title comes into action next year.
Beginning yesterday (September 7th), businesses were able to request to forbid their name from use within the new suffix, which was designed to make it easier to find or avoid pornographic material on the internet.
As part of the plans, which are being administered by the ICM Registry, existing adult entertainment websites are able to submit their application to reserve a place within the new domain name - in order to promote a sensible approach to the content.
Stuart Lawley, chief executive of ICM Registry, said: "Regardless of what your personal views are on the existence of pornography on the internet, at least .XXX will give people the information they need to make a choice."
As part of the plans, brands and IP holders have 50 days to register their applications, with those not wanting to be included expected to pay a one-off fee of between £100 and £200 - which will vary from company to company.
Mr Lawley also revealed that more than 4,000 celebrity names have been banned from the launch in a bid to protect high-profile figures from being associated with the adult entertainment industry.
However, Jerry Barnett - chairman of the Adult Industry Trade Association - told BBC News that activists would be likely to attempt to block explicit content online.
"From the industry and freedom of speech point of view, I'm concerned that pro-censorship and morality campaigners will use this as an excuse to try and introduce some form of censorship," he explained.
Earlier this year, ICM Registry announced that non-profit organisation the International Foundation for Online Responsibility, which creates policies for the domain name, announced the Sponsored Community founding members of its policy council.
