Domain name disputes up 24 per cent, figures reveal
Businesses and organisations looking to invest in an internet domain must make sure their address is unique to them after the number of domain name disputes increased last year.
Figures published by the National Arbitration Forum (Forum) reveal that 2,177 dispute cases were registered last year, a 24 per cent increase from the 1,759 cases in 2009.
Furthermore, more than 2,100 of the cases - or 96.6 per cent - that were filed involved top-level domain names such as .com and .org.
Kristine Dorrain, the Forum's internet legal counsel, said that the increase in numbers is a reflection on how many people are taking part in domain name registration.
"The business of registering and monetising domain names continues to grow," she said.
"As a result, it is inevitable that some percentage of those names will involve cyber-squatting and more cases than ever are being filed."
It comes after figures released by the domain name registry EURid revealed that .eu domain registrations have doubled in the last five years as businesses look to get online.
