Domain name registrations increase in first quarter
Millions of domain names were registered in the first quarter of this year as companies look to market their brands further on the internet.
Research published by VeriSign yesterday (May 25th) revealed that four-and-a-half million domain names were added, an increase of 2.2 per cent on the final quarter of last year.
Additionally, 15.2 million top-level domain names were registered - a 7.9 per cent increase on the same time last year - suggesting that businesses are looking for new web addresses by which to launch and market products.
Renewal rates also increased in the first quarter, with 73.8 per cent of addresses being take up again. This compares with 72.7 per cent in the final quarter of last year.
Research published by the National Arbitration Forum last month revealed that domain name disputes increased 24 per cent last year as more companies made sure that their address relates to their company.
