Domain names cross 225 million mark
The number of registered internet domain names has surged to reach more than 225 million worldwide, according to IT company Verisign.
In a Domain Name Industry Brief, it was revealed that nearly six million domain names were added in the final quarter of 2011 alone.
The popular Top Level Domains (TLDs) .com and .net experienced aggregate growth over the same period to reach a combined total of 113.8 million names.
New .com and .net registrations total nearly eight million during the quarter, a four per cent year-on-year rise in new registrations.
According to the report, this represents a two per cent increase in the base over the third quarter of 2011 and eight per cent increase over the same quarter in 2010.
It remains to be seen what effect the new ICANN rules (Internet Corporation for Assigned Named and Numbers) will have on these statistics.
At the moment, there are only 22 TDLs but brands and businesses currently have the opportunity to apply for any domain name that they choose.
