Technology chiefs in Qatar hailed a "major milestone" after the country's Domains Registry (QDR) was officially unveiled on Wednesday (March 2nd).
Specific organisations will be the first to be offered the chance to have a Qatari domain name while domain registration will open up for the rest of the country in August.
Qatar becomes the first country in the world to offer Arabic domain names to those using the internet, making the web more accessible to Arabic users, according to the Gulf Times.
Salah al-Kuwari, chief technical manager at ictQatar, told the news provider that businesses will benefit from an expanding target audience.
"As more organisations and individuals begin adopting non-Latin domain names the internet will literally be opened up to brand new audiences," he said.
"The Arab world represents a region with enormous potential for growth both in terms of usage and the creation of new digital content."
Earlier this week it was revealed that domain registrations increased by more than six per cent in 2010.
