EU domain name registrations double over five years, report says
Domain registration for addresses ending in .eu have doubled in the last five years, according to a new report by top-level domain name registry EURid.
It found that having become available in April 2006, 3.4 million domain names have now been registered with the suffix after 1.7 million sales in its first month.
Furthermore, .eu is now the ninth largest top-level domain name in the world with EU businesses, organisations and residents all using the addresses for their websites.
Marc Van Wesemael, general manager of EURid, said that the popularity of the domain name can be seen five years after it came into force.
"Steady growth since then has reinforced .eu's position as one of the world’s ten largest top-level domains," he said.
"This proves that .eu gives companies an effective means to present themselves online as open for business across Europe."
It comes days after the 100 oldest domain names were released, with symbolics.com toping the list.
