Firms urged caution over generic top-level domains
Organisations will soon be able to apply to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) for their own generic top-level domain names (gTLDs).
However, they have been warned that the process will likely be "complex, lengthy and costly", with applications taking up to 19 months due to the potential for copyright infringement that this development introduces.
According to law firm NautaDutilh, applications for the new gTLDs will require an evaluation fee of $185,000 upfront.
Writing for Lexology, the firm's intellectual property experts Philippe Peters and Pierre-Yves Thoumsin, explained that ICANN will publish a list of gTLDs under application on its website.
This will provide third parties with the ability to object if they think names are confusingly similar to their own or if an applied-for gTLD infringes on their trademark rights.
According to new research, some two million .au domain names have now been registered for the Australian market.
The country's domain name organisation AusRegistry revealed that 86 per cent of the country's domain names are .com.au, while nearly 11 per cent are .net.au.
