The Scottish government is asking Westminster to support its bid to create a new internet domain name for Scotland.
Not-for-profit company Dot Scot Registry was set up to promote the campaign two years ago and wants Scottish websites to use the suffix '.scot' instead of '.co.uk' or '.com'.
Alex Neil, Scotland's cabinet secretary for infrastructure and capital investment, has now written to UK communications minister Ed Vaizey to seek his backing for the plan.
"I am sure the UK Government with its responsibility for internet governance will want to support us," Mr Neil said.
"Across-the-board support would undoubtedly strengthen our hand and build momentum behind the bid."
The Inverness Chamber of Commerce, which is currently campaigning for faster and more reliable broadband services in the Highlands, has already voiced its support for the move.
Chief executive of the chamber Stewart Nicol told BBC News that a Scottish domain name would "give us a local identity over the internet."
Many bids for new domain names are expected to be submitted next year, as the window for generic top level domain registration is due to open for three months from January 12th.
The International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has claimed that the large number of companies, organisations and cities applying for their own web domain will lead to "one of the biggest changes in the history of the internet".
ICANN announced its decision to increase the number of internet address endings from the current 22 at its meeting in Singapore in June, when chairman of the board Peter Dengate Thrush said the changes are set to "usher in a new internet age".
According to the organisation, domain names will be able to end with almost any word in any language.
