The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has had its plans to create several hundred more new domain names criticised by a government agency in the US.
Meredith Baker of the commerce department said it is not certain "whether the potential consumer benefits outweigh the potential costs".
She stated that ICANN must ensure that the security and stability of the domain name system is not adversely affected by the proposals before going ahead and that other areas, such as how much market power some firms will have, need to also be addressed.
Her comments were made in a letter that was sent to ICANN from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, an organisation which she heads, earlier this month.
ICANN has overseen the domain names sector since September 1998 when it was founded.
In June of this year, its board voted in favour of plans to open up domain names, which would allow businesses to register new top level domains such as .shop.
