ICANN expected to approve .xxx domain names
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers looks set to approve a new domain name suffix specifically for adult content.
The regulatory body will meet later today and is expected to approve the usage of the .xxx domain name, despite protests by several political and religious groups.
It has been following a strategic policy of opening up the number of top-level domain names, in a bid to encourage greater competition online.
Since 2007, ICANN has been receptive to the idea of opening up the internet, however there has always been strong opposition to an adult domain.
One of the groups that has expressed its opposition is the Government Advisory Committee, a group of representatives that monitors ICANN for national governments.
It is believed that some governments would consider blocking access to the .xxx domain name extension if it was established.
The Free Speech Coalition, which represents the adult entertainment industry, believes that .xxx domain names will cost adult website operators significantly more money to maintain, and has also subsequently lodged its objection, according to the National Journal.
