New domain name suffixes to become available
Websites will soon be able to register almost any word as a domain name suffix.
As of January 12th, new top-level domains will see the biggest changes in more than 20 years as familiar endings such as .com and .org could be replaced with .itv, .pepsi and similar brand titles.
Icann, the organisation which regulates domain names, has suggested that the increased level of variation could heighten the amount of choice and competition in the web industry.
Peter Dengate Thrush, a former chairman of Icann's board of directors, told BBC News that the domain name suffixes were in need of a major overhaul and that the changes to come into force will be welcomed by the industry.
"No-one would design a domain name system now for several billion users just using a couple of names that we started the system with in 1985," Mr Thrush said.
Pre-bidding opportunities will open next month for new premium domain names including Work.com, Host.com and QR.com at the DOMAINfest Global Conference Live Auction in California.
