Recent figures revealed that the number of domain names registered reached 184 million.
According to the 2009 Domain Name Industry Brief published by internet infrastructure services firm VeriSign, this figure was reached by the end of the second quarter of 2009.
Quarter-on-quarter, this represented an increase of one per cent, although the rise compared to the same period the year before was nine per cent.
It announced that the overall base of .com and .net domain names increased to 93.5 million in the second quarter of 2009.
As with the overall number of domain names, this was an increase of one per cent compared to the quarter before, but the year-on-year increase was seven per cent.
However, compared to the second quarter of 2007, the increase in domain names registered was 28 per cent.
Earlier this month, Kabir Bedi, senior web consultant at web design firm LeXolution IT Services, said in an article for DomainInformer that the web address is as important as the design of the site when creating an online portal.
