Top-level domain names 'best for cost and reliability'
Top-level domain names are the most secure and cost-effective way to launch an online presence, according to one expert.
Andrew Girdwood, media innovations director at search and digital agency Bigmouthmedia, said that a top-level web URL could help with search engine rankings and could therefore create a higher level of business success.
"People are used to .com and .co.uk in the UK and most people know brand.com. It will be an absolute pain in the neck to try and educate your customers and your potential clients that your website is brand.brand. It is not an advantage now," he added.
The expert explained that there are major costs involved in getting a domain name such as .pepsi or .jobs assigned to a business and that this could often put people off in favour of more well-known names such as .co.uk and .com.
However, if they become cheaper in the long term, people should consider buying into the name to give complete brand identity to their site and company, he declared.
Mr Girdwood commented: "Why would you swap .com for a tenner a year for the absolute hassle of applying for your own domain name?"
He also mentioned that there is an additional hardship of maintaining the infrastructure requirements needed to keep a site going and to keep it regularly updated.
Websites were given the option to host their own domain name suffix from January 12th.
Icann, the organisation which regulates domain names, suggested that the increased level of variation could increase the amount of choice and competition for online businesses.
This marks the biggest change to the system in 20 years, whereby popular and recognised domain names could be replaced by ones such as .pepsi, .itv or .bbc.
Former chairman of Icann's board of directors Peter Dengate Thrush told BBC News that domain names were in need of a major overhaul to meet the demands of the evolving industry and that more diversity will be sought through a larger selection of available names.
