Welsh businesses 'are in favour of new domain name'
Businesses in Wales have voiced their support for the introduction of new .cymru and .wales domain names, which would give the country its own online identity.
A survey conducted by the London Economics Wales consultancy highlighted 59 per cent of firms and other bodies backing the move, along with 69 per cent of consumers, reports BBC News.
Results were collected from a sample of 1,003 individuals, of whom 21 per cent were Welsh speakers and 250 were senior decision makers in Welsh organisations.
The findings emerge after internet regulator ICANN announced plans to allow countries and organisations to apply for the new names from January 2012.
A follow-up report said: "A Welsh domain name can play a positive supporting role in activities aimed at raising the brand profile of Wales and encouraging exports and inward investment."
This comes after a study carried out by not-for-profit organisation Nominet revealed UK domain name registrations have increased by 10.5 per cent during the last year.
