.xxx domain name goes on general sale

.xxx domain name goes on general sale

The domain name .xxx has gone on general sale in a move that has stirred up some controversy among internet users.

Since the first .xxx URLs were released on restricted sale in September there have been some 100,000 purchases of the domain names.

However, Manwin Licensing and Digital Playground, two of the internet's biggest adult entertainment firms, have described the umbrella domain name as "anti-competitive" and claimed it will create an online "monopoly".

BBC News reported that the two pornography companies are suing the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann), which regulates web address registrations for their use of the .xxx name.

Icann approved the deal for the specific adult content name in March this year and has since been planning its release to the general online arena.

ICM Registry, chief executive Stuart Lawley said:  "It has been ten years in the coming and today the floodgates are open. We would hope that the number of domains sold will more than double very quickly."

He added that the price of the domain names were is comparable with other providers for the niche market - slamming the accusations from the two firms that they would charge above the odds for the .xxx name.

"We will contest them vigorously. There are some incumbents who would like to keep the status quo but how can a top-level domain name be anti-competitive?," he commented.

The registry claimed that the .xxx sites will be a safer alternative to those available online at present and that they will benefit from daily malware scanning from security protection software.

BBC News reported earlier this year that celebrities and famous faces will be able to protect their names from hijacking through the .xxx domain name. Those in the public eye can have their names blocked for use by adult content providers.
