£3.5 billion spent in busiest online spending week in US history
The biggest week of online shopping occurred in the US during the seven days ending December 17th as people opted to do their Christmas spending over the internet.
comScore's latest ecommerce figures show that around $5.5 billion (£3.5 billion) was spent between December 11th and 17th, an increase of 14 per cent on the same period last year.
Figures were bolstered by Free Shipping Day (December 17th) which saw a 61 per cent spending increase on the corresponding day in 2009.
comScore's chairman Gian Fulgoni said that he does not expect spending to now increase, making Cyber Monday – where over $1 billion was spent – the busiest ecommerce day in history.
"At this late juncture in the online holiday season, we have likely already witnessed the peak spending day of the year, which means that Cyber Monday should emerge as the season’s heaviest online spending day for the first time in history," he said.
Last week, Hitwise said that visits to ecommerce websites including Boden, Bench and French Connection rose after big marketing campaigns.
