Amazon launches shopping site in India
Retail giant Amazon.com Inc has launched an online shopping website in India.
The site, called junglee.com, will sell more than 12 million products from more than 14,000 Indian and global brands, including Amazon's very own Kindle e-book reader.
India has more than 100 million internet users and the country is evolving rapidly as an e-commerce hub.
The online sales industry is growing at almost 50 per cent a year.
Amazon.com vice-president Amit Agarwal said in a statement: "We are excited to give customers in India a single online starting point where they can shop a wide selection of products sold by local and global retailers, and make informed purchasing decisions."
Junglee.com's biggest rival will be Flipkart, India's most prevalent online retailer.
The shopping site was in fact founded in 2007 by two former Amazon.com employees.
It has more than two million registered users and sells an estimated ten products per minute.
