The potential that online shopping offers to retailers has been highlighted by the latest financial report from Barnes & Noble (B&N), the world's largest bookseller.
In the 2011 fiscal year, the company's total sales rose 20 per cent to a record $7 billion (£4.3 billion), driven by a 50 per cent increase in purchases made via its website.
Like-for-like sales from online shopping rose 78 per cent for the fourth quarter and 65 per cent for the whole year when compared to the corresponding period of 2010.
This result helped to make up for a disappointing performance from B&N stores, which saw their trading fall 2.9 per cent year on year in the final quarter.
Earlier this week, Econsultancy predicted that the market for online shopping technology, maintenance and consultation fees will be worth £690 million by the end of the year.
If the forecast proves accurate, it will mean the channel has grown in value by 14 per cent during 2011.
Count on Hostway to help you deliver a secure, around-the-clock online shopping experience to your customers.
