Despite the difficulty in recreating the High Street shopping experience online, the number of people visiting ecommerce websites rose over the Christmas period, according to new research.
Research analysts Hitwise found that Boxing Day was the busiest day of the year for online retailers with visitor numbers increasing by 12 per cent compared to pre-Christmas traffic.
Furthermore, December 26th also saw numbers 26 per cent higher than Christmas Day which itself saw more people logging onto ecommerce sites than ever before in 2010.
Robin Goad, Hitwise UK's research director, wrote that people also look at items online first before heading out onto the High Street.
"The sales shopping experience is hard to replicate online, and most bargain hunters would prefer to hit the high street or local mall on Boxing Day; what this data shows is that many of them carry out research online first," he said.
Ecommerce spending is also set to increase in the clothing industry over the coming year, according to Tina Spooner, director of information at IMRG.
