Many internet users are still concerned about the security implications of shopping via ecommerce services, research has discovered.
The study by German IT firm Avira found that almost 20 per cent of consumers do not currently shop online due to security concerns, while 22 per cent stick to well-known brands such as Amazon.
According to the survey, just 30 per cent of people said they have no worries at all about online shopping.
"Because of the continued data breaches, phishing attacks and security vulnerabilities that get reported on almost every day, consumers have every right to not feel 100 per cent safe while they shop online," commented Sorin Mustaca, data security expert at Avira.
The study of more than 2,900 consumers found that almost 29 per cent of people worry their personal data will get into the wrong hands when they purchase items online
Mr Mustaca advised people to always check the reputation of the company they are buying from and only provide their financial details when they are convinced the website is secure.
He also suggested using payment options that do not require money upfront, such as PayPal.
A report published by internet service provider TalkTalk earlier this month revealed that more than eight million UK homes were targeted by cyber criminals in some way during the first quarter of 2011.
In addition, online payments provider PayPoint.net recently commissioned a study that predicted online fraud will see an 18 per cent rise by 2015, with the proliferation of social media and mobile channels creating more opportunities for criminals.
Commenting on the research, economist at the Centre for Economics and Business Research Scott Corfe said retailers can win over consumers and boost sales by "guaranteeing their online security and providing safe payment mechanisms".
