Ecommerce regulation planned by European parliament
Sweeping changes relating to purchases made via ecommerce channels could be implemented following a vote from the European parliament.
Under the proposals, which are expected to be given formal approval by the Council of Ministers in July, online retailers must give more precise information to shoppers on their contact details, the products that have been ordered and the total price.
Consumers will also be given the right to change their minds about purchases they have made during a two-week cooling-off period.
Andreas Schwab, the parliament's rapporteur and chief negotiator, said the administration felt the need to regulate "off-site and distance contracts".
He added: "The new directive is thus a good example of how Europe brings more benefits to consumers and traders alike."
Last month, IMRG and Capgemini revealed UK shoppers spent £5.2 million via ecommerce channels in April, representing an increase of 19 per cent year on year.
Alcohol sales were given a boost by the bank holidays, with the average price per order rising to £174.
