Ecommerce sales rise in first half of 2011
Ecommerce sales for the first half of 2011 have risen beyond industry predictions, a new report has revealed.
According to the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index, online shopping increased by 19 per cent between January and June this year compared with the corresponding period of 2010.
The results, which are one per cent higher than predicted, represent sales of £31.5 billion so far this year - which have emerged as a result of several factors.
A struggling high street and poor weather throughout summer have contributed to consumers' decisions to stay at home, as well as online alcohol purchases brought about by April's royal wedding.
Chris Webster, head of retail consulting and technology at Capgemini, said: "Soggy weekends and major sporting events encourage us to go online for our shopping – it's quick, it's convenient and we can do it 365 days a year."
This news comes after the latest research from Google and the British Retail Consortium revealed that the total number of online retail searches had risen by 27 per cent in the second half of the year.
