Ecommerce spending surges in Q1 of this year, says IMRG Capgemini index
Ecommerce figures grew at their strongest rate for three years in the first quarter of 2011, according figures released recently.
The IMRG Capgemini e-retail sales index showed that Brits spent £5.1 billion over the internet during March, a rise of 14 per cent year-on-year.
Additionally, the index shows that spending grew by 18 per cent in the first three months of 2011, with health and beauty products seeing the strongest month in March with 32 per cent growth.
Chris Webster, head of retail consulting and technology at Capgemini, said that the figures reveal a "solid month for online retail".
"The 18 per cent growth in the Index during Q1 is indicative of a new trend. Consumers are indeed tightening belts, but they are still shopping, and have simply become more strategic in their buying habits," he said.
Management consultancy group AT Kearney said last week that China will become a "formidable force" in the ecommerce market over the next five years.
