Ecommerce success seen at Sainsbury's
Food retailer Sainsbury's saw its ecommerce sales rocket during the festive period.
The chain reported a 20 per cent leap in online sales in the days before Christmas.
Sainsbury's bosses praised the work of supply chain operators for their success in being able to meet the high demand of customers using the supermarket's website to buy their groceries in preparation for the holidays.
Justin King, chief executive at the company, said the latter period of 2011 was "a strong quarter, rounded off by our best Christmas ever, despite the economic backdrop".
Furthermore, it was said that continued improvements in IT and store-picking processes were significant factors in the seasonal success.
The nationwide retailer expanded its services to the online market in 2009 when it began selling non-food products such as clothing and electricals through ecommerce sites.
Marks and Spencer also recently reported a growth in web-based shopping activity in the lead up to Christmas, enjoying a rise of 12 per cent in the total number of online orders.
