Food and grocery merchants are "lacking some efficiency" online
Websites for buying groceries online are not impressing many cosumers, a survey has found.
Yuseo asked 1,000 internet users to browse the sites of various high-profile supermarkets and rate them.
The average navigation experience score was just 51 per cent with an average user satisfaction rating of six out of ten.
Food retailers will therefore have to improve their sites if they are to fully take advantage of the e-commerce market.
IMRG chief executive Andrew McClelland warns that a poor website can put customers off even before they consider other factors relating to the purchase.
“A retailer’s go-to-market proposition may be very different from the competition but navigation glitches, poor site usability, bad imagery and deficient product descriptions will turn a customer off before they even start to worry about your delivery proposition," he said.
Research in other sectors such as travel found that online, mobile and brand reputation are becoming increasingly important among consumers.
More than three-quarters of travellers prefer to research online than in-store.
This increasing reliance on e-commerce suggests that website quality can have a substantial effect on a company's profits.
