A leading organisation which protects the rights of small businesses is calling for the European Union (EU) to drop plans to force firms to sell their products to almost every country in Europe.
The Forum of Private Business said that the upcoming EU Consumer Rights Directive, which if introduced would see companies forced to trade across Europe, would be "devastating" for small companies.
It added that under Article 17, firms of any size would be forced to pay postage costs on returned items worth more than £35, providing another financial strain on companies trying to remain in business.
Phil Orford, the Forum's chief executive, said that while larger chains can cope with the changes, smaller companies could struggle.
"Many independent online retailers only have the expertise and the infrastructure to sell to the domestic market, or to a select few overseas countries, and some have built themselves up around one particular product which they are only licensed to sell in a certain national market," he said.
The news comes after it was revealed last week that clothing-themed ecommerce websites have seen purchases grow by 152 per cent over the last five years.
