Google Wallet ecommerce solution launches in the US

Google Wallet ecommerce solution launches in the US

Google has paved the way for the next generation of ecommerce solutions with the launch of its Google Wallet mobile payment service.

First unveiled by the search giant in May, the application effectively transforms smartphones into wallets by making use of near field communications (NFC) technology.

After extensive testing, the first version of Google Wallet is now available in the US to owners of the Nexus S 4G from network operator Sprint. The app will be rolled out to all Nexus S 4G users via an over-the-air update.

Once the ecommerce program goes live, customers can use it to make payments from Citi MasterCard credit cards and Google Prepaid Cards.

Early adopters of the technology who link their prepaid cards to their Google Wallet account before the end of the year will be rewarded with a free bonus of $10 (£6.40).

As well as being supported by Citi and MasterCard, the app could soon allow payments to be made from Visa, Discover and American Express cards after the financial institutions made their NFC specifications available.

Commenting on the launch, Google's vice president of payments Osama Bedier said the company appreciates MasterCard and Citi's involvement in the launch.

"Our goal is to make it possible for you to add all of your payment cards to Google Wallet, so you can say goodbye to even the biggest traditional wallets," he commented.

Mr Bedier added this is "just the beginning" for the service, which will be extended to work on more smartphones over the coming months.

Peter Ayliffe, chief executive of Visa Europe, added that banks, manufacturers and mobile operators have been presented with "an exciting opportunity" by the convergence of payment applications on smartphones.

"Building Visa technology into Google Wallet gives our member banks a revolutionary way to meet their customers' needs through the smartphone," he added.
