US consultancy company IBM has today (September 19th) announced the launch of a new product aimed at helping ecommerce businesses turn ideas into action while increasing online sales revenue.
The Smarter Commerce on Power Systems solution focuses on integrating systems based on IBM Power7 processor technology to allow retailers to improve shopping experiences for internet customers by transforming it into a more personalised task.
In addition, the tool is set to handle online sales surges during peak shopping seasons without loss of performance, as well as integrating customer purchase information across sales channels such as mobile, in-store and over the internet.
Office products firm Staples adopted the technology in an effort to meet the increasing competitive demands of the online marketplace and set up an easier and more efficient online purchasing experience for its customers.
The company, which has the second largest internet retail revenue in the world, created an optimised website that was able to contend with high-volume transactions to support its customer-centric business model.
Ken Moore, vice president of IT at Staples North American Delivery, said: "From a performance perspective, we saw customer experience and page download times improve anywhere from 25 percent to 55 percent with the move to IBM Power7 Systems."
Using the newly developed system, ecommerce retailers are able to scale their systems to handle large volumes of shoppers without impacting performance, as well as improving customer service by providing data availability and analysis.
This news comes after Andrew Corbett, membership services director for the UK IT Association, urged companies to carry out market research in a bid to gain knowledge about online shopping trends before developing a strategy.
In addition, Mr Corbett urged businesses to ensure they ask for guidance from a reputable organisation when setting up their first online store.
"You can look at certain things like what organisation the supplier is a member of, what accreditations they've got, what professional bodies they're in that might indicate they're a serious company," he added.
