London 2012 organisers run into ecommerce difficulties
London 2012 organisers have inadvertently highlighted the importance of a solid ecommerce system, as sports fans struggled to sign up for tickets on their first day of sale.
The ticketing system for the Olympics went live on Tuesday, 500 days before the start of the games.
Organisers took the decision of providing customers with over a month to apply for tickets rather than allocating them on a first-come, first-serve basis, to avoid a big rush of traffic to the site.
However, some fans were unable to finish their transactions due to problems with card payments.
Visa, which has an exclusive deal with the organisers of the Olympics, was forced to apologise after a significant number of fans found they could not pay for tickets with cards due to expire before August 2011.
Visa Europe said in a statement: "We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to those cardholders who are having problems applying for London 2012 tickets.
"While we are aware that cards which expire before August 2011 are not currently being accepted, as a priority we are working closely with all relevant parties to resolve this issue as soon as possible."
