Morrisons looking to break into ecommerce with Kiddicare.com auction
Morrisons has purchased online retailer Kiddicare.com for £70 million, as it makes its first foray into the world of online retail.
The supermarket is Britain's only major grocer that still does not have an ecommerce and delivery solution for those unwilling to go into its stores.
Morrisons is currently Britain's fourth largest food retailer, with 429 shops across the UK.
It intends to use the technology behind Kiddicare's successful retail site as the basis for its own online business, although offerings will initially be restricted to non-food items.
Kiddicare will continue trading as a separate entity, with the duo behind the site's success, Scott and Elaine Weavers-Wright, set to embark on an ambitious expansion plan.
Dalton Philips, chief executive of Morrisons, said: "This acquisition brings not only a respected, successful and fast-growing specialist retailer into the Morrisons group but also a robust, scalable and highly advanced technology platform around which we can begin to build our ecommerce offer."
Morrisons hopes to launch its first online products in 2012.
