Ecommerce figures could rise further over the next four years after a new report estimated that 1.4 billion people will have access to fixed-line and mobile broadband in 2015.
Ovum predicted that 28 per cent of all of the world's internet users will have access to broadband in this time, or 13 per cent of the global population.
Furthermore, 3.6 billion people will be use the internet through their mobile phones in 2015, suggesting that more online shopping will take place in the years to come.
Charlie Davies, co-author of the report and an Ovum analyst, told tmcnet.com that there will be growth across the globe.
"However, dual access use will not only happen in the developed world. Rapidly growing urban areas in the emerging markets where there is a larger proportion of high-value customers will also see growth in this area," he told the news provider.
IMRG and Capgemini reported earlier this week that the UK's ecommerce sales rose by 25 per cent in December, compared to the same time last year.
