Online spending sites gain as high street struggles
Ecommerce websites again saw a surge in spending in the UK across May, despite sales on the high street struggling.
That is according to new research published by BDO's High Street Sales Tracker, which showed that spending increased by an average of 24.5 per cent in the last month.
However, sales on the high street fell by 0.1 per cent in May, compared to the same time last year, suggesting that more people are venturing online instead of doing their spending in-store.
Don Williams, the national head of retail and wholesales at BDO, said that there is plenty of work for retailers to do to try and boost sales over the coming months.
"Consumers started to spend in April but the fact remains that we all have less money than we did a year ago," he said.
"There are still opportunities for retailers, however, the lack of sales growth shows that they can't rest on their laurels in their bid to woo shoppers."
La Senza launched a new dynamic website for the Australian market last week (June 1st) as it looks to increase sales through the internet.
