Managed hosting services such as cloud computing could be adversely affected if too many industry standards are placed on the sector.
Tom Nolle, a software engineer, said in an article for Internet Revolution, that imposing too many standards on the sector could impact on growing companies.
He suggested that young firms might be stifled in their implementation of cloud computing systems if there is too much legislation and regulation of the industry.
Mr Nolle asserted that imposing too many standards might actually be worse than setting none at all.
"In the case of cloud computing, there's also the big question of whether standards being pushed for private clouds will end up contaminating the successful internet model of cloud computing," he commented.
This comes after a survey of IT professionals at small and medium-sized businesses conducted by Spiceworks found that 57 per cent currently use cloud computing.
