IDC predicts future growth for mobile broadband
Growth of the mobile broadband market is to be driven by increasing use of wireless devices such as smartphones and tablet computers, research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) has predicted.
The company forecast that adoption of these products will mean more internet users in the US will access the web on the move than through wired machines such as PCs by 2015.
It added mobile products will become the primary source of web access in Japan and western Europe shortly after and research vice-president of media and entertainment at the company said businesses in the industry need to "forget what [they] have taken for granted on how consumers use the internet".
He added the shift in access is "going to make the internet a very different place".
IDC recently found shipments of featurephones are on the decline in western Europe, as consumers continue to opt for smartphones, which offer mobile internet access and the ability to download apps.
